I Am L3Harris: Kevin

I grew up outside the United States as a religious minority where I was often treated as a second-class citizen. I still vividly recall being barred from using the same water fountain as my peers in school simply because of differing religious beliefs. The thought of how damaging such experiences can be for a child still sends shivers down my spine. Coupled with the lack of equal access to higher education and job prospects, these factors significantly restricted my potential for success.

My life changed when I received asylum to the United States as a religious refugee. Initially, times were challenging as I juggled three jobs, pursued my education and started a family with my wife. Giving each of these aspects of my life the time and attention they deserved was a struggle, but I worked and studied diligently and stayed confident that a brighter future lay ahead.

Throughout my journey, I have encountered numerous teachers that significantly influenced my life. They encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and share my story, which helped me realize the positive impact it can have on others. Their support was instrumental in helping me realize my full potential. This led me to become a top student and secure several scholarships and grants - a feat that was unattainable as a minority in my birth country.

I have also met leaders and mentors who offer their guidance and coaching without ever questioning my beliefs, including my colleagues at L3Harris. This was a stark contrast to the limited opportunities I faced in my home country where I could not access the same employment prospects as others. Their support has been invaluable in my personal and professional growth. I take great pride in my role protecting our service members and our nation's security.

Reflecting on my journey fills me with pride for my achievements, and I couldn't be happier with where I am now both personally and professionally. I would never have these opportunities had I not come to the United States. Although it can be easy to take our freedoms and opportunities for granted, we must remain aware of the hardships and lack of freedom others endure in different parts of the world. I hope everyone can cherish and appreciate the invaluable gift of living in the "Land of Opportunity" just as I do every single day.
