Educators Rising Learning Expo Oct. 9

Dakota State University's College of Education & Human Performance is hosting an Educators Rising Learning Expo on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

"We are excited to host so many future teachers on campus during the Ed Rising Expo," said Dean David De Jong of the College of Education & Human Performance. "It is a wonderful opportunity for future teachers to get to know our instructors and faculty."

The event is an opportunity for high school students interested in teaching to learn what it means to be an educator. Participants will engage in hands-on activities like a campus scavenger hunt and breakout sessions. They will also meet with current College of Education & Human Performance students, faculty, and alumni.

Some of the topics attendees will be able to learn about include , how math and art intersect, special education, taping athletic injuries, teaching to students learning English, teaching reading, using artificial intelligence to be a more efficient teacher, and teacher simulations utilizing a software that allows participants to practice decision making in a safe environment.

Educators Rising is a national organization dedicated to "cultivating a new generation of highly skilled educators by guiding young people on a path from high school through college and into their teaching careers," according to its website.

DSU partnered with the South Dakota chapter to give students the opportunity to come to campus and learn about becoming a teacher at Dakota State. The college is expecting over 100 to attend.

"One of the students' favorite parts of the day is the hands-on sessions hosted by faculty," said Jennifer Nash, associate professor of education, and expo organizer. "What they may not realize is that this is also our favorite part of the day. We enjoy sharing our love for teaching by working side by side with students who want to be teachers."
