Donald Trump has been re-elected 47th president of the United States

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) acknowledges Donald J. Trump has been elected 47th president of the United States. However, NASW is deeply troubled by statements Trump has made regarding immigrants, women, people who are LGBTIA2S+, and people of color and we will challenge any of his policies that harm our nation's most vulnerable populations.

Despite our many differences with President-Elect Trump during his previous term, we know that we must work with the new administration to address social justice reforms. These include affordable health care, racial and gender equality, as well as helping more Americans achieve economic stability.

"We believe that regardless of political affiliation, our primary focus must remain on meeting the needs of individuals and communities," said NASW CEO Dr. Anthony Estreet, Ph.D., MBA, LCSW-C. "NASW's mission is to ensure social workers can effectively serve their clients, and we will continue to advocate for access to essential resources and services."

Considering this outcome, NASW recognizes the need for unity and collaboration. As we move forward, NASW is committed to advocating for policies that uphold social justice principles, support people who are marginalized, and strengthen the social safety net for the many constituencies who social workers serve.

As we enter this new presidency, NASW emphasizes the importance of resilience, advocacy, and continued support for social workers nationwide. We urge our members to remain active in shaping policies that affect social work practice and improve well-being of our entire society.

"The NASW Political Action for Candidate Election (NASW-PACE) had endorsed Kamala Harris and this is not the outcome we had hoped for," said NASW-PACE Co-Chair Kelli Soyer, LMSW. "However, we live in a democracy, the voters have made their decision, and we will abide by the results."
