ACLU-NJ Statement on 2024 Election of Donald Trump

In response to the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha issued the following statement:

"Based on President-elect Donald Trump's previous term, and his escalating rhetoric on the campaign trail this year, it is clear that our rights, liberties, and the future of our democracy are at grave risk. As his administration attempts to implement Draconian policies, including those outlined in Project 2025, we anticipate a flood of attacks across nearly all civil rights and liberties, particularly against the most marginalized among us. It is up to the states to protect and expand our rights and defend against the chaos and destruction of a second Trump administration. And New Jersey must lead the way.

"Since the beginning of the previous Trump administration, New Jersey has enacted new protections to safeguard reproductive freedom, reduce the prison population, advance immigrants' rights, and achieve fairer elections. We know how to lead the nation by example because we've done it before, and the ACLU of New Jersey is committed to doing it again over the next four years and beyond. We are ready to fight back against attacks on our most vulnerable community members; we will pursue policies to protect our democracy, expand access to the ballot box, advance racial justice, protect immigrant community members, ensure reproductive freedom, and end mass incarceration. Across the nation, the ACLU filed over 400 legal actions during the first Trump administration - we are stronger and more prepared today. We are ready to take action from day one.

"We know there will be unforeseen threats to rights and freedoms over the next four years. We see the pain and despair felt in this moment - the ACLU-NJ and our partners are ready to do all we can to ensure communities thrive and democracy prevails."
