Clemson students, Littlejohn Community Center team up for Helene relief

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Clemson area residents woke up to a different town.

Homes were damaged. Power lines were down. Many roads were impassable. Stores and restaurants were closed. Some residents were without electricity for days.

As the Clemson area recovered, a group of Clemson students with the Science Outreach Center teamed up with the Littlejohn Community Center to provide lunch for Clemson city workers and community members.

The Clemson students are undergraduate STEM Ambassadors who work on the National Science Foundation-funded "My STEM My Story Project," an afterschool STEM club that empowers youth to identify problems in their community, conduct scientific investigations, and create and implement action plans to address those issues.

They were joined by seven Clemson Elementary School Beta Club students at the event on October 4, where they served 311 barbecue lunches prepared by the Littlejohn Community Center staff.

The event was made possible through a partnership between the College of Science and the Littlejohn Community Center.

"It takes a village. We all need to come together and support each other. Yes, during disasters such as this storm, but also every day," said Littlejohn Community Center Director Adraine Jackson-Garner. "We need each other."

College of Science students regularly spend time with students in the community through a tutoring and mentoring program called CU-REACH (Clemson University Reaching for Equitable and Cultural Heights), which pairs Clemson university students with students from elementary and middle school in the community.
