WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement after voting to block the transfers of mortars, tank rounds, and Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) to Israel.
"To finally put an end to the bloodshed and achieve lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians, we must prioritize de-escalating this conflict. That cannot happen if we look the other way when it comes to how specific weapons are used and their extraordinary toll.
"I strongly believe that the eradication of Hamas is paramount for stability and democracy in the region. This terrorist organization is evil, barbaric, and must be defeated. That's why, in the immediate aftermath of the horrific attack by Hamas on October 7th, I voted to advance $14 billion to bolster Israel's defense, and I remain committed to Israel's right to defend itself.
"As Israel defends itself, it must follow U.S. and international humanitarian law. Right now, Israel is acting in direct violation to the requirements mandated under the Foreign Assistance Act and the Arms Export Control Act - which prohibit the United States from providing weapons to any countries that violate internationally recognized human rights or obstruct U.S. humanitarian aid. Under any serious analysis, the Netanyahu government is not meeting this moral and legal obligation.
"As an ally, we must send Israel's government a strong message that now is the time to de-escalate this conflict and refocus on securing a ceasefire and the release of all hostages."
