The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) will host approximately 100 educators during the National Board Certification Awareness and Support session in South Charleston. This will provide educators interested in seeking National Board Certification with a comprehensive overview of the process.
National Board Certification is a highly respected K-12 credential that showcases an educator's teaching excellence, instructional practices and support of student success. Additionally, in accordance with W.Va. Code §18A-4-2a, national board certified teachers (NBCTs) receive an annual stipend of $3,500, with most counties offering additional salary supplements. West Virginia NBCT mentors support candidates through the rigorous process and the WVDE reimburses educators who successfully earn the credential the cost involved.
Nationally, West Virginia currently ranks:
14th for the percentage of NBCTs per capita
17th for new NBCTs
18th for NBCTs maintaining their certification
25th for the number of NBCTs statewide (1,218)
Research has consistently shown that NBCTs have a significant impact on student learning outcomes, particularly among vulnerable student populations.
This week's session is the second of two provided by the WVDE, continuing a yearlong cycle of support. The first was held in Bridgeport earlier this summer with more than 70 educators in attendance.
