Saint John Fire Celebrates 50 Years of Dedicated Rescue Service with New Apparatus

The Saint John Fire Department (SJFD) proudly celebrates a significant milestone: 50 years of dedicated rescue service to the citizens of Saint John. This momentous occasion is further highlighted by the introduction of a state-of-the-art rescue unit, enhancing the department's emergency response capabilities.

The journey began in 1973 when Percy Clarke took the helm as Chief of the Saint John Fire Department. A visionary leader, Chief Clarke recognized the growing need for fire-based rescue services, leading to the establishment of SJFD Rescue 3. Initially staffed with a company officer and two firefighters, and equipped with specialized tools and medical training, this unit laid the groundwork for an innovative approach to emergency response.

Rescue 3 initially operated out of Station 3 on Union Street before relocating to the new Station 1 in 1976. Over the years, "The Squad" has responded to a wide range of incidents, including structure fires, motor vehicle accidents using the Jaws of Life, industrial incidents, Haz-Mat calls, and medical emergencies, providing critical treatment and transportation for patients in need.

In 1994, the Squad transitioned to a "heavy" rescue unit, enhancing its capabilities with a four-firefighter crew and a newly equipped Rescue 3 vehicle that combined specialized rescue tools with engine firefighting capabilities. Further advancements came in 2004 with the introduction of an E-One "Typhoon" Class apparatus, which later found its home at Station 5 on Adelaide Street as "Rescue 5." In 2012, the unit was relocated to its current quarters on Courtney Avenue, now serving as Rescue 4.

Coinciding with its 50th anniversary, SJFD is excited to introduce a new rig: a second Typhoon Class apparatus from E-One, which has successfully passed acceptance testing and commissioning. Nicknamed "Anywhere, Anytime," this new addition underscores the unwavering commitment of the Rescue 4 team and the entire Saint John Fire Department to continue providing exemplary service to the community.

The new Rescue 4 officially went into service on the morning of August 22, 2024, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the City Council, CAO McGovern, City Leadership, and all city employees who contributed to making this possible.

The introduction of the new Rescue 4 apparatus ensures that the Saint John Fire Department is well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of the City of Saint John for years to come, proudly continuing their legacy of service and dedication to the safety and well-being of the community.
