Taxpayers in Wyandotte County to see marginal refund in 2024

Published on December 18, 2024

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS - Taxpayers in Wyandotte County are advised that their 2024 Real Estate Tax Statement will be updated, lowering the total levy due for three taxing jurisdictions, including the Kansas City, Kansas Community College, the Kaw Valley Drainage District, and the Wolcott Drainage District.

In reviewing the 2025 budgets submitted to the Unified Government Clerk by KCKCC and the Drainage Districts, the Unified Government determined that these three entities exceeded revenue neutral status. KSA 79-1965 directs the Clerk to reduce the levy to comply with the existing statutes which requires a reduction in the budgets submitted.

"We have heard that the revenue neutral state legislation has caused confusion within several Kansas counties," said County Administrator David Johnston. "The impacted taxing jurisdictions have been made aware of errors in their submitted budgets and are working together to ensure all records are corrected and updated."

The Unified Government has initiated a recalculation of levies and notified the KCKCC, the Kaw Valley Drainage District, and the Wolcott Drainage District. Following the state statute, the Unified Government will upload recalculated totals to the online pay system, myWyCo. Once the data has been validated, taxpayers will be able to find their updated total by entering their address into the myWyCo app. These corrections will also be reflected in the second 2024 Real Estate Tax Statements, mailed in April 2025.

The entities exceeded are as follows:

  • KCKCC-2024 budget stated $51,850,668; 2025 budget stated $52,796,060, an overage of $945,392.00.
  • Kaw Valley Drainage District - 2024 budget stated $1,584,683; 2025 budget stated $1,650,515, an overage of $65,832.00.
  • Wolcott Drainage District - There was no budget submitted for 2024. Estimated tax was $2,727.78; the 2025 budget submitted stated $2,733, an overage of $5.22.

The average taxpayer will see a difference of roughly $20. This amount will be credited to the second 2024 payment or, if paid in full, refunded to the taxpayer.

The Unified Government will update a news article on wycokck.org with any additional information or frequently asked questions regarding your 2024 Real Estate Tax Statement.
