CORREA VOTES AGAINST GOP PUSH TO UNFAIRLY RESTRICT ACCESS TO BAIL

WASHINGTON - Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) voted against H.R. 8205, a GOP-led piece of legislation that would randomly restrict access to bail bonds, and released the below statement:

"This bill was not a serious attempt to address or reduce violent crimes in our communities. It was a thinly veiled attempt to restrict access to bail bonds,"Correa said."If my colleagues were interested in making it more difficult for violent criminals to post bail, they should have proposed legislation to increase the bail bond threshold for those violent criminals specifically-not restrict bail access for people across the board."

"This bill would have effectively banned non-profit bail funds and required more pre-trial detention nationwide-which would overcrowd our jails and put those less financially stable at greater risk for unfair detention. Instead of passing partisan messaging bills, I urge my colleagues across the aisle to work with my colleagues and I to invest in community violence intervention and provide support to law enforcement in our communities," he concluded.
