Paraguayan musicians to share sounds of South America

To continue Hispanic Heritage Month at Pittsburg State University, Assistant Professor Ramiro Miranda and Pittsburg teacher Irene Diaz Gill, both natives of Paraguay, will present their South American serenade on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. in McCray Hall.

It is part of the first PSU Hispanic Music Festival, organized by piano instructor Isaac Hernandez, who is also co-president of Hispanics of Today, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month which runs through Oct. 15.

Miranda joined the faculty in 2023, teaching upper strings, conducting, and leading the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra. As a violinist and chamber musician, Miranda has given solo recitals in the U.S., Latin America, and China.

He is a guest conductor with the Midwest Chamber Ensemble in Kansas City, university orchestras, and middle and high school honor orchestras.

He has shared the stage with critically acclaimed classical guitarist Berta Rojas, and is a founding member of Jopara Ensemble, String Daze, and alternative styles string quartet Switchgrass.

Gill is a cellist and serves as the orchestra director at Pittsburg Community Middle and High School. Prior to teaching at the public schools, she taught cello at her private studio as well as at Emporia State University and Friends University.

She co-founded and directed the youth orchestra program at the ESU Stringfully Academy as well as the ESU String Camp. She plays cello in the Midwest Chamber Ensemble, Wichita Grand Opera, and the Southeast Kansas Symphony, and performs regularly with the Jopara Ensemble and String Daze.

The concert will be free for campus and the community.

The remaining concert in the festival is a trumpet showcase by Ignacio Cornejo on Oct. 9.
