City's Response to Green Peter Drawdown and Impact on Water Supply

CITY OF LEBANON DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY DUE TO IMPACTS ON WATER SUPPLY ASSOCIATED WITH GREEN PETER DRAWDOWN

For Immediate Release October 10, 2024

LEBANON, OR - In an effort to proactively address potential challenges to the city's water supply and quality stemming from the Green Peter Drawdown, the City of Lebanon has declared a state of emergency. This precautionary step ensures that the city is prepared to take swift action should disruptions occur, safeguarding the health and safety of our residents.

"As we face the potential impacts of the Green Peter Drawdown, waiting until the emergency is upon us would be too late to respond effectively," said Mayor Ken Jackola. "This declaration allows us to act now, so we can prevent the situation from becoming a true crisis. By preparing in advance, we ensure that our residents and businesses will have access to safe, clean water."

The state of emergency empowers the City Manager to take immediate, legally authorized steps to manage the situation, including reallocating city funds for emergency use, coordinating a city-wide response, and working with state and federal agencies to mitigate any impacts. Should the water treatment plant be unable to meet demand due to issues with supply or quality, the declaration gives the City Manager the authority to enforce water use restrictions within city limits to conserve resources.

The City of Lebanon has already begun assessing potential impacts and remains in close communication with relevant agencies. The declaration is a necessary tool to ensure the city is ready to manage any water shortages and protect public safety.

"We're doing everything we can to stay ahead of this issue and prevent it from escalating," said City Manager Ron Whitlatch. "This is about planning for the worst-case scenario so we can continue delivering essential services to our community. It's a precautionary step, but one we can't afford to delay."

Residents will be notified if any water restrictions are put in place and are encouraged to follow updates through the city's website or by contacting the City at 541-258-4923.
