Planned Closures on Long Island Drive Under I-285 for Bridge Beam Setting Starting December 14

WHAT: Weather permitting, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors will implement a Long Island Drive closure and detour on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. under Interstate 285 to set bridge beams.

To safely expedite this work, a signed detour will be required using Mt. Vernon Highway, Lake Forrest Drive, and Burdette Road. Once the detour is complete, motorists should expect temporary flagging operations as needed until remaining bridge operations are complete.

WHEN/WHERE:

Saturday, Dec. 14, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an alternate date of Jan. 11, 2025

Long Island Drive Detour:

  • Motorists traveling northeast on Mount Vernon Highway to Long Island Drive should merge onto Hammond Dr. and take a right onto Lake Forrest Drive.
  • Motorists traveling north on Long Island Drive to Mount Vernon Highway should take Burdette Road to Lake Forrest Drive.
  • Motorists traveling to Springmont School should access school from the south to the north. There will be no north to south access during this detour.
  • Motorist should utilize side streets of Mount Vernon Highway and Lake Forrest Drive to access areas around Long Island Drive.

The I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane project extends the auxiliary lane between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive and reconstructs the Mt. Vernon Highway bridge over I-285.

The I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane project is one of the I-285 Advanced Improvement Projects. It is part of the large-scale MMIP projects advancing across the state to create additional capacity to improve freight movement, provide operational improvements and efficiencies, enhance safety, and decrease travel times on the transportation network.

ADVISORY: The exact time may change due to weather conditions. There may be intermittent traffic pacing and lane and ramp closures that occur within the work zone in addition to this notice. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.
