Boulder Police Continue Investigating Sickened College Students

BOULDER, Colo. - The Boulder Police Department is continuing its investigation after several college students were sickened at a fraternity party over the weekend.

The initial calls started coming in between 10 and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. Officers were called to the hospital and the Kappa Sigma fraternity at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue for reports of adult males who were sick/overdosing. The preliminary information indicated six males were transported/treated at the hospital and by medical personnel on scene.

Officers now believe there were five males who were treated at the scene or transported by personal car or ambulance to the hospital for treatment, but that there could be more. One male-whose prognosis was initially grave-is now stable but remains at the hospital.

Based on the initial information, Narcan use, and evidence found at the scene, officers believed the males had overdosed on possibly tainted drugs and alcohol consumption. Out of an abundance of caution and in an effort to keep the community safe, the Boulder Police Department put out the news release on Sunday based on the preliminary information officers had at the time.

Further investigation since then has led detectives to believe the individuals consumed an extreme amount of alcohol and some had consumed drugs, which led to them become violently ill. It does not appear that fentanyl was involved.

Detectives seized cocaine found at the scene and it's currently being tested. They're also investigating whether the actions at the party were related to the fraternity.

This investigation is still in the early stages and detectives will be seeking cooperation from Kappa Sigma and its members.
