RELEASE – Reno-Tahoe International Airport Reports Busiest Summer in Nearly Two Decades (Statistics)

Continued Growth Signals Strong Future for Northern Nevada Air Travel

RENO, Nev. (Sep. 17, 2024) - Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) has experienced its busiest summer in nineteen years, marking a significant milestone in northern Nevada's growing air travel demand. This summer, RNO saw an impressive 10% increase in overall passenger traffic compared to last year, continuing its upward trajectory.

• June 2024 saw a 12% increase

• July 2024 saw an 8% increase

• August 2024 rounded out the season with a 9% increase

Adding to this record-breaking trend, Aug. 25, 2024 and Sep. 2, 2024 became the single busiest days for RNO in 19 years, with about 20,000 passengers passing through the airport each day. Contributing to this increase was the addition of 90,000 new seats that airlines brought to Reno-Tahoe this summer, from both new and returning routes.

"RNO's summer performance is a testament to the region's growth and increasing appeal as a destination for both business and leisure travelers," said Tina Iftiger, Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Chief Air Service Development Officer. "Our team is working closely with airline partners to ensure that we meet this demand and continue delivering the best possible options for our passengers."

Looking ahead, RNO expects continued growth into the fall season, with a 9% increase in available seats compared to the same time last year. Despite the typical seasonal slowdown, the airport is still on track to handle a projected 4.8 million passengers by the end of 2024 in comparison to 2023's total of 4.6 million passengers.

New Routes Drive Momentum

As RNO looks to 2025, several new and returning routes are set to land at RNO, offering even more connectivity for passengers. Southwest Airlines has recently announced a new nonstop service from Reno to Austin, Texas, starting Mar. 6, 2025. Other anticipated routes include new service to Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines starting Oct. 1, 2024, and to San Diego on Dec. 19, 2024, offering expanded options beginning this fall and winter.
