Completed Emergency Repairs for Water Main Leak at Alvarado-Niles Road and Central Avenue

As of Wednesday night at 10:51 PM, crews have completed the emergency repair work necessary to fix the leak in the main water line that took place at the intersection of Alvarado-Niles Road and Central Avenue earlier in the day. All lanes are now reopened for travel.

The City of Union City thanks Alameda County Water District (ACWD) staff, along with Union City Police Department and Public Works Department staff, and all other emergency response personnel who have worked diligently since approximately 11:30 AM to assess and repair the water line.

The City also extends its appreciation to the community for its patience and cooperation, recognizing the inconvenience the road closure and detours may have posed to the public. As a busy and heavily-traveled thoroughfare, it was critical that the impacted portion of Alvarado-Niles Road was closed to vehicular traffic for the safety of both the public and repair crews. This also allowed for ACWD to complete the repair work as expeditiously as possible.

It is important to note that although water is fully restored to the water main, temporary discolored water may continue because of the change in pressure. Customers are advised to flush their internal plumbing by following the steps outlined on ACWD's website at: FAQs • Discolored Water FAQs. Customers with questions about water service or quality can also contact ACWD at (510) 668-6500.
