Rep. Cuellar Announces $1,126,545 in Federal Reimbursements for Jim Hogg County ISD

Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced $1,126,545 in federal funding for Jim Hogg County ISD on Wednesday, August 21st.

Dr. Cuellar announced $1.1 million in federal reimbursements for free or reduced meals for Jim Hogg ISD district students for the 2023 to 2024 school year. The federal funding comes from USDA's National School Breakfast Program (SBP) and National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

"It's important to provide our children with the highest quality meals to support them in their education without worrying where their next meal will come from," said Dr. Cuellar. "Because of this, families can save money by not having costs associated with breakfast or lunch, allowing money to be spent on other necessities that will boost our local and national economy. These are critical programs that I will continue to fund, support, and expand to address our nation's food insecurity issue and children's nutritional health. Thank you to the JHCISD Superintendent Dr. Susana Garza, JHCISD School Board, and all the educators for their continued commitment to prioritizing the next generation's well-being."

The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public, non-profit private schools, and residential childcare institutions. The SBP started in 1966 as a pilot project and was made a permanent program by Congress in 1975.

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) are both federally assisted meal programs that operate in public, non-profit private schools, and residential childcare institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost, or no cost, lunches to children each school day. The program was established under Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act, signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1946.
