August 2024 Spotlight: Pearly Yelverton

1. Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?

It could inspire Durham Residents to learn more about inner-city work and responsibilities. They could discover how they can contribute as taxpayers and full-fledged citizens.

2. What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?

I became a member of the Mayor Committee seventeen years ago and I have been a member of the Mayor's Committee for Person's with Disabilities ever since. I initially joined from a recommendation from the Lions Club for the Blind, now LLC Industries, where my husband Clarence was the first African American Manager and visually impaired.

All praises to God. I am now a 24-year Epilepsy Survivor. Having to retire much earlier on disability. Being a member of this committee is part of my mission to reach back and bring someone with me.

It also provides me with valuable resources and opportunities for our community of people with disabilities. In our Epilepsy Support Team, we believe each one reaches one.

3. What is your favorite part about living in Durham?

My favorite part of living in Durham is attending my high school field trip. I wanted to be part of Bull City because of the great home and living environment, enormous employment opportunities, and outstanding healthcare schools and universities. Most importantly, Durham is a city of great faith for praise and worship, which is your choice.
