Washburn University School of Law Expands Clinical Faculty with Appointment of Kirby Tyrrell
Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University School of Law proudly announces the appointment of Kirby Tyrrell as Associate Professor of Law. As part of the Washburn Law Clinic, Tyrrell will lead the Family Justice and Immigration Clinic, bringing a wealth of experience in public interest law and clinical teaching to the role.
Tyrrell previously served as a Robert M. Cover Clinical Teaching Fellow at Yale Law School, where she co-taught in the Worker and Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic. There, she supervised students on a variety of cases, including civil rights, labor and immigration matters. Her prior experience also includes her role as a staff attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, where she litigated key cases to protect and expand reproductive rights nationwide. Tyrrell began her legal career as a Skadden Fellow at Her Justice in New York City, creating a medical-legal partnership that provided family, matrimonial and immigration services.
In her new role leading the Family Justice and Immigration Clinic, Tyrrell will oversee representation in domestic relations and immigration cases. Clinic interns, under Tyrrell's guidance, will represent community members and work on policy projects.
Washburn University School of Law Dean Jeffrey Jackson expressed enthusiasm for Tyrrell's appointment, stating, "Professor Tyrrell's extensive background in public interest law and her dedication to clinical education will greatly benefit our students and the community. Her leadership in the Family Justice and Immigration Clinic will enhance our commitment to providing practical, hands-on legal training while serving those in need."
Tyrrell earned her J.D. from Columbia Law School, where she received numerous honors, including the Lowenstein Fellowship and the Venable Public Interest Fellowship. She also holds an A.B. in History from Harvard University. Throughout her education and career, Tyrrell has proved to be a fierce advocate for reproductive and civil rights, and has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and legal education, making her a valuable addition to Washburn Law.
