Just down the street from the College of Arts & Sciences is a new steak-and-cheese sub shop specializing in unique toppings, Ziggy Bombs. Building on a successful run in Worcester, the restaurant recently opened an outpost at 173 Amory Street, just steps from Comm Ave.

The business evolved from pop-up venues to a food truck to a permanent brick-and-mortar restaurant near Worcester's city hall. The Amory Street spot marks Ziggy Bomb's second location.

Ziggy Bombs serves a variety of specialty steak-and-cheese-subs, smash burgers, wraps, wings, salads, fries, nachos, and deep-fried ribs, as well as 13 flavors of homemade soda, called Ziggy Pops.

Although never having a particular craving for cheesesteaks, I decided to visit Ziggy Bombs with two fellow BU Today interns, Crystal Yormick (COM'26) and Eden Mor (COM'25) to see what the hype was about.

Walking into the restaurant, we immediately spotted the long food-prep and grill area, which allows customers to watch their food being cooked. The workers were hospitable and told us we could top our food with virtually anything. I ordered the Pu Pu Platter specialty steak-and-cheese sub, Crystal ordered a Boom Boom Chicken Wrap, and Eden a Hot Honey Pepperoni sub. We also had a side of Nacho Bombs to share.

The Pu Pu Platter I ordered was a creative twist on the American Chinese pu pu platter, which typically comes with crab rangoon, chicken fingers, and boneless spare ribs. My sandwich combined this with the traditional steak-and-cheese, and was topped with duck sauce.

However, as soon as I opened my box, I encountered a major problem: the boneless spare ribs were spilling out of the soft sub roll, and the chicken fingers were so large that there wasn't even space for them between the bread. I took my first bite regardless, fingers making contact with the sticky duck sauce, and as expected, the ingredients tumbled out.

The Pu Pu Platter is a play on American Chinese food with a steak-and-cheese twist.

My sandwich was $18.99.

Eden had a similar experience with her Hot Honey Pepperoni cheesesteak, cubed pepperoni, sautéed onions, and roasted red peppers, topped with hot honey. She said it was delicious, but difficult to eat. The thin walls of bread couldn't support the great mass of meat in between, and while the smoky taste of pepperoni was strong, the hot honey was not as prominent in comparison.

"I enjoyed the sandwich, but could only get a couple bites down before it got too greasy for my taste," Eden says. "I wish there was more spice to it, but I did like the pepperoni chunks."

Her sandwich: $16.99.

Crystal's chicken wrap was one of the lighter options on the menu, and it was "simple, but tasty," she says. The original wrap comes with chicken strips, romaine lettuce, and fried onion strings, topped with house sauce and served on grilled pita bread.

"I really liked the chicken and the wrap," she says. "I think in the future they should fully wrap the wrap because it was falling apart, and difficult to eat in that sense."

The Boom Boom Chicken Wrap is an ideal option for those seeking a healthier sandwich.

The wrap cost $12.99.

(One of the Ziggy Bombs highlights is the generous portion sizes, making their sandwiches ideal for college students-you can take away half of your lunch and have it later for dinner.)

Surprisingly, my favorite item wasn't my steak-and-cheese sandwich. It was the Nacho Bombs: chips topped with shaved ribeye steak, sautéed onions, roasted red peppers, Cheez Whiz, lettuce, and cherry tomatoes. The portion was a perfect size (and only $9.99), and the crunchy iceberg lettuce and juicy tomatoes balanced out the heavier cheese and steak.

For someone, like me, who can't stomach large, heavy subs, Ziggy Bombs might feel a little overwhelming. I would definitely visit again to try more of their sides and salads, like the Steak Taco Salad or Bacon Cheddar Fries. One thing to note, however, is that this restaurant does not have vegan-friendly options.

Owner Mike Devish has plans to expand, with the next location set for Leicester, Mass., at some point between August and October. He hopes to establish more outposts in other college areas as well. The BU location is open until midnight, a plus for those who are seeking a late-night study meal or coming home from a night out. To attract an even larger crowd, they should consider staying open until 1 or 2 am.

"Although I would probably visit again," Crystal says, "I don't know if it's going to be [my] go-to spot, just because there are so many other restaurants in the area."
