Plan lays out strategies for meeting future EV demand

The City of Bellevue is developing a plan for how to ensure the city has the infrastructure, policy and programs needed to support growing numbers of electric vehicles. The draft Electric Vehicle Roadmap is a plan to prepare Bellevue for more EVs on area streets, as well as the vehicle charging infrastructure drivers will need at home, at work and in public spaces.

The roadmap includes forecasted growth in the number of EVs in Bellevue in coming decades, and outlines strategies to prepare for that anticipated growth. This project is part of the Sustainable Bellevue Plan, which sets a goal of 25% EV adoption by 2030 and 100% adoption by 2050. The plan has a goal to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions in Bellevue by 80% by 2050.

Today, approximately 9% of vehicles in Bellevue are electric. By 2030, it is expected that more than 30% of vehicles will be electric. There are currently fewer than 650 publicly available EV chargers in Bellevue. To support the goals laid out in the roadmap, Bellevue will need more than 2,800 public chargers. In addition to publicly available charging, Bellevue community members, including residents of multifamily housing, will need capacity and access to charging at home.

City staff began working on the roadmap last winter, and input from community members and key interested parties was solicited through the winter and spring.

The public is invited to provide feedback on the draft roadmap. The comment period is Monday, Sept. 9, to Monday, Sept. 23
