Building Food Security for Hartford

The University's parking lot D was abuzz with activity Thursday, as approximately 150 volunteers spent the day cutting and painting wood, drilling PVC pipe, and constructing the infrastructure for a new neighborhood farm.

The hydroponic farm, to be installed on the corner of Homestead and Albany Avenues near the UHart campus, is the latest project of Levo International, Inc., a social enterprise dedicated to empowering people to end poverty.

When complete, the farm will supply thousands of pounds of fresh produce per year - some of which will supply the University's on-campus food pantry, "The Nosh."

Since 2022, the pantry has offered access to fruits, vegetables, meat, frozen and non-perishable food, and personal hygiene products to students, faculty, and staff who need them. Created by UHart's Office of Student Engagement and Inclusion, the pantry is supported by Aramark (University Dining Services), and is an approved partner of Connecticut Foodshare.

Levo International has spearheaded the creation of several neighborhood farms throughout Hartford.
