Attorney General Mayes Addresses Arizona Supreme Court Ruling in Gilmore v. Gallego, Encourages Cities and Towns to Work with Public Employee Unions

PHOENIX - Attorney General Kris Mayes this week sent a letter to Arizona's cities and towns addressing the recent Arizona Supreme Court ruling in Gilmore v. Gallego and discussing some of its potential implications for public entities, unions, and workers across Arizona. The letter highlights the importance of maintaining productive employer-employee relations while seeking constitutional labor solutions.

"I encourage cities and towns to work productively with employee unions to find solutions that foster strong relationships while ensuring compliance with Arizona's laws," said Attorney General Mayes. "While the Gilmore ruling addresses specific concerns about some release-time provisions and notes other issues that might arise in future cases, it is important to note it does not prohibit all such arrangements."

In the letter, Attorney General Mayes also reminds public entities and unions to seek legal counsel to address any fact-specific questions and ensure their agreements adhere to Arizona law.
