New Scripps News/Ipsos poll found most Americans surveyed oppose Jan. 6 pardons

Nov. 21, 2024 By Molly Miossi

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A majority of Americans surveyed (64%) oppose President-elect Trump pardoning Jan. 6 protesters, according to a new Scripps News/Ipsos poll examining post-election voter sentiment on a range of key campaign issues. The survey also found a widespread opposition (72%) to restricting women from participating in military combat.

The survey, which was conducted last weekend, also found Americans are hopeful Trump will quickly improve their economic outlook but remain deeply divided on his campaign's key promises.

Key findings:

  • Many respondents (64%) oppose Jan. 6 pardons, including 90% of Democrats, 68% of independent voters and 40% of Republicans.
  • Nearly three quarters of Americans surveyed (72%), including 89% of Democrats and 64% of Republicans, oppose restricting women from participating in military combat.
  • A slight majority surveyed, 51%, say they expect their own economic situation to improve in the next year. Republicans are much more likely to be optimistic about the future. Nearly eight-in-10 expect their financial futures to be brighter in 2025, compared to half of independents and just 30% of Democrats.
  • Just 42% of respondents think inflation and the price of goods will decrease during that same period.
  • A majority of people surveyed (66%) say they favor eliminating taxes on tips and overtime wages.
  • The same goes for negotiating a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine - 78% of respondents support it.
  • Respondents were nearly divided on Trump's campaign promises of shutting down the U.S.-Mexico border (50% support, 44% opposed), easing restrictions on drilling for fossil fuels (46% support, 48% oppose) and new tariffs (45% support, 49% oppose).
