Escambia County Fire Rescue has added two more red bulbs to the wreath, bringing the total to seven red bulbs during "Keep the Wreath Green."
At 2:12 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, six Escambia County Fire Rescue units responded to a residential structure fire at the 200 block of Airport Blvd. Heavy flames were visible from the carport of the single-story wood-framed home. ECFR rapidly worked to extinguish the fire and brought the situation under control by 2:58 p.m. Despite the rapid response, significant repairs are needed before the home can be re-occupied. The American Red Cross provided assistance to those displaced due to the fire. There were no injuries or fatalities. ECFR conducted the investigation and determined an electrical issue stemming from the laundry room caused the fire. Due to the occupant displacement, the sixth red bulb was added to the wreath.
On Monday evening, another residential structure fire occurred at the 100 block of Eden Lane. Seven ECFR units responded to the fire, which featured visible smoke upon arrival at the single-story wood-framed structure. Firefighters located the fire in the attic and provided rapid water application. The situation was brought under control by 8:55 p.m. While in the structure, ECFR firefighters rescued two dogs and provided immediate care once they were removed. The occupants of the home were displaced, resulting in the seventh red bulb added to the wreath. The home can re-occupied once significant repairs are made. The Bureau of Fire and Arson is investigating the cause of the fire.
The "Keep the Wreath Green" fire safety campaign is a collaborative initiative with the City of Pensacola to promote fire safety during the month of December. During the month-long campaign, five-foot wreaths will be on display at 21 county fire stations and five city fire stations, as well as Escambia County's Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building downtown, the Escambia County Public Safety Building, Pensacola City Hall and Cordova Mall. Each time firefighters respond to a residential or commercial structure fire with damage, a green light bulb will be replaced with a red one to remind citizens of the dangers posed by fires in residential and commercial buildings.
