Kildee Announces Federal Funding to Train the Next Generation of Doctors and Improve Health Care in Mid-Michigan

WASHINGTON-Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) today announced new federal funding for Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals to help train local doctors in mid-Michigan, including those who serve rural and underserved communities.

The federal grants, totaling $1,120,000, were awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program. This funding will help Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals train more doctors in community-based settings, such as community health centers and rural health clinics, to help improve access to care across mid-Michigan.

"Ensuring our community has well-trained physicians will help mid-Michigan residents receive better health care and ensure all families have access to quality, affordable care, especially in rural communities," Congressman Kildee said. "Our health care system continues to face workforce challenges and this important program helps to build a stronger health care workforce to serve mid-Michigan."

"This program is extremely important to the future of primary care in Michigan and beyond. This funding makes additional resident education possible. We thank Congressman Kildee for his advocacy and care," said Dr. Samuel Shaheen, President and CEO, CMU Medical Education Partners.

Congressman Kildee has long championed efforts to improve access to health care for Michiganders. In May, Kildee announcednearly $6 million in federal funding for two community health centers in mid-Michigan-Great Lakes Bay Health Centers and Hamilton Community Health Network.
