UNC Asheville new media major John Jamison is an intern at the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in downtown Asheville, where he is turning his passion for video editing into valuable job experience.
The UNC Asheville Career Center Internship Program helped match John with this paid internship that aligns with his career interests. He's gaining new skills, as well as a new confidence in his abilities.
"I could have done a lot of things, but I chose the video marketing side and it turned into helping with digital marketing."
One of the projects Jamison worked on was an advertising video to promote the organization's annual "{Re}HAPPENING," an event which showcases modern artists at Black Mountain College's historic campus near Lake Eden.
"I've learned how to use Wordpress, and other software like Canva and Square. I've been introduced to other social media software like Meta, which manages Facebook and Instagram posts for corporate profiles," Jamison said. "I learned a lot about Black Mountain College that I didn't before."
Some of the benefits of his internship was getting to know artists who have been in the industry longer and keeping up practice on his art, Jamison said.
"People tell me that is the best way to get recognized and get the job I'm looking for," Jamison said.
"Having this internship has given me more stuff to add to my portfolio and the quality of the stuff I've been putting out here has been better."
