Where Creativity Meets Innovation: The Garfield Park Conservatory Opens New Artist's Garden Show on July 3

"The Creative Mind of George Washington Carver" will give visitors a peek into the scientist's artistic side

The newest Artist's Garden Show titled The Creative Mind of George Washington Carver opens on July 3 at the Garfield Park Conservatory, located at 300 N. Central Park Ave. The show runs from Wednesday, July 3rd through Sunday, September 22, 2024.

George Washington Carver was known for his contributions to agricultural science through the development of hundreds of peanut products, but he was also a gifted artist who inspired this show. Through interpretive panels, visitors will learn more about his fascination with botany, and its effect on his scientific work. Visitors are encouraged to return to the garden throughout the season to see how it evolves. The bloom will be best during the month of August.

Carver believed that our emotional peace is interdependent on our surroundings and that everyone deserves to be surrounded by beauty. "That's how we feel at the park too. There is beauty all over our city," said Chicago Park District Superintendent and CEO Rosa EscareƱo. "And this summer, visitors can find beauty and inspiration in the Artist's Garden by enjoying the beautiful floral landscape inspired by Carver's paint-washed and botanical illustrations."

There will be programming for all ages around the George Washington Carver exhibit. Adult programs include two plein air painting sessions in partnership with the Smart Museum as well as a lecture from Amanda Williams, a 2022 MacArthur Fellow and Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance board member. Her current artistic work includes George Washington Carver. Kid-friendly family programs will be George Washington Carver themed, including topics such as soil, botanical art and ways to use a peanut. Dates will be available on the GarfieldConservatory.org website soon.

Reservations are required for this show. For more information, visit chicagoparkdistrict.com/conservatory-flower-shows.

Visitors are also welcome to experience the beauty of all of the outdoor gardens in the Conservatory during the summer months.
