The Observatory participates in Regional Working Group on Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System in the South China Sea Region

Senior Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory, Ms Lam Ching-chi, joined the Chinese delegation attending the Twelfth Meeting of the Regional Working Group on Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System in the South China Sea Region (WG-SCS) of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/PTWS) under the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Jakarta, Indonesia from 7 to 8 November 2024. She currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the WG-SCS.

The meeting reviewed the progress of work and future plans of the Member States in enhancing the capacity in tsunami monitoring and prediction. It also discussed ways to further enhance the tsunami warning capability and build community preparedness and resiliency to reduce tsunami-related risks, and shared progress and outcomes to meet the UN Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme goal of 100% tsunami ready by 2030.

Member States of the WG-SCS include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.
