American Cancer Society Hosts 2024 ACS-Jiler Professors and Fellows Conference

The biennial ACS-sponsored meeting focuses on groundbreaking research & preparing future leaders

ATLANTA, November 6, 2024 - The American Cancer Society (ACS) is proud to hold the 2024 ACS-Jiler Professors and Fellows Conference in Tucson, Arizona, November 7-10, 2024. More than 100 cancer research scientists and clinicians are scheduled to attend the meeting, including ACS professors, postdoctoral fellows, and clinician scientist development grantees to support the conference theme, "Fostering Innovation in Cancer Research." The event will feature a recorded message from Dr. Kimryn Rathmell, director of the National Cancer Institute, followed by a keynote address from Dr. Alpa Patel, senior vice president, population science at the American Cancer Society. The speech is titled "The Science Behind the ACS Cancer Prevention Studies."

"By convening members of the cancer research community at events like the Jiler Conference, we can help foster collaborations and inspiration among the best and brightest researchers whose work will lead us in outsmarting cancer, together," said Dr. William Dahut, chief scientific officer at the American Cancer Society. "This meeting is also an opportunity for researchers to meet with ACS leadership and Discovery team members to learn more about how they can support and participate in the full scope of work that ACS is doing in the fight against cancer."

Conference highlights include:

  • Five scientific sessions showcasing studies supporting ACS's research priorities. Individual sessions will feature talks from two ACS professors and two ACS-funded mentored grantees, followed by a panel discussion.
  • Experts from two ACS-funded Cancer Health Equity Research Centers (CHERCs) at Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona will discuss their work in cancer health equity.
  • ACS mentored grantees will present their research during a dedicated poster session, offering a unique opportunity for early career investigators to discuss their findings and get feedback from ACS professors, the leading voices in cancer research today.
  • Four career development sessions will provide ACS mentored grantees with advice, support, and mentorship from ACS professors and ACS Discovery team members to help set them up for success in their cancer research careers.

The ACS-Jiler Professors and Fellows Conference is made possible through a generous endowment from the Henry and Elsa Jiler Memorial Fund, with guidance from Dr. Alan Solomon, American Cancer Society professor. The Jiler Family valued creating intellectually stimulating environments to facilitate the exchange of information and promote collaboration since the inaugural gathering of professors in 1999.
