(BOWIE, Md.) - The season of trivia got underway at Bowie State last week with the first round of the Honda Campus All Star Challenge (HCASC) campus competitions. Students can still sign up to competein the next round on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 4 - 7 p.m. in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, Room 1330.
The Honda Campus All‐Star Challenge is a scholarly competition celebrating Black excellence and showcasing the academic talents of top HBCU students from across the country. In the national finals, held each year in Los Angeles, four‐student teams face off in head‐to‐head competition quickly answering questions about history, science, literature, religion, math, the arts, pop culture, and sports.
The season kicks off with multiple on-campus competitions to identify top talent. This year Bowie State looks to bring back three returning players from last year's team: Mahari Craven, Chidera Benedict, and Julian Clarkson. The campus competitions not only help the returning team members get back to form but also serve as a recruitment opportunity to draw out interested students and grow the team's ranks.
"Once we complete the campus tournament, we'll send out an invitation to the best players," said Dr. Shirelle Briscoe, the HCASC campus coordinator. "Those who seem to have mastered a certain subject, we invite them to join our varsity team."
When the team is solidified, Briscoe said the students begin intensive study and preparation. They will compete in a series of scrimmages with other HCASC teams from around the area leading up to the national qualifying tournament in February at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. There, teams will have the chance to show they have the chops to qualify for the national championship, hosted in April by Honda.
"We're worthy of being selected for California," said Craven, a sophomore communications major with a broadcast journalism concentration, whose favorite topics include sports, music, Black history and geography. "The main goal is not only to go to California but to win while were there."
In addition to Dr. Briscoe, the Bowie State team is supported by Nkem Onianwah, head coach; and Etana Laing and Anthony Loga, assistant coaches.
