9/14/24 Offense: Aggravated Vehicle Hijacking/Crash

(Peoria, IL) On Friday, September 13, 2024, at approximately 10:20 p.m. Peoria Police responded to the 5300 block of W. Haymeadow Place on a report of a vehicular hijacking that had just occurred.

When officers arrived, they located the vehicle's owner, an adult male who told police he was approached by two individuals wearing masks who took his vehicle and fled.

Both suspects were armed with handguns.

During the course of this investigation, the stolen vehicle was located in the area of Timberedge Drive and Orange Prairie Road. As officers attempted to stop the vehicle it sped away at a high rate of speed.

While fleeing police, the stolen vehicle crashed at War Memorial Drive and the entrance ramp to I-74 eastbound. One of the suspects, a 14-year-old male, was taken into custody at the crash scene. The other suspect, the driver of the stolen vehicle, fled

the scene on foot. A short time later officers were able to apprehend the other suspect in the vicinity of the crash. This suspect was identified as a 15-year-old male.

Both juveniles were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the vehicle crash. The injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

One firearm was located at the crash scene. During a search of the juvenile's flight path officers located another handgun with an extended magazine.

During the course of this incident, Illinois State Police (ISP) Troopers responded to assist PPD officers. While responding, an ISP vehicle was involved in a crash with another vehicle near War Memorial Drive, and W. Scenic Dr. Peoria Fire Department responded to assist with this crash and utilized "Jaws of Life" to remove one of the

vehicle occupants. All individuals involved in this crash were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. ISP is conducting the crash investigation.

The 14-year-old juvenile was arrested for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Firearm under 21, Armed Robbery, and Armed Vehicular Hijacking.

The 15-year-old juvenile was arrested for Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Speeding, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Firearm under 21, Armed Robbery, Armed Vehicular Hijacking, Obstructing, and Several Traffic Violations.

Both juveniles will be transported to the Juvenile Detention Center when they are medically cleared from the hospital.
