Marine Career Exploration Event SURGING Into Detroit on July 31

SURGE, a collaboration between the Great Lakes Boat Building School, Riverside Marina, educational organizations, marine companies, and state leaders is set to make waves in Detroit on July 31 with the goal to expand access to marine industry careers.

SURGE: Detroit River will take place on Wednesday, July 31st at Riverside Marina in Detroit and will welcome 300 guests broken into morning and afternoon groups. These groups will explore educational sectors offering hands-on activities that focus on marine electronics and systems, propulsion and boat manufacturing, and the boating experience on the Detroit River. The US Coast Guard and the Detroit Sheriff and Fire Department will be on site to guide safety presentations and showcase the "fire boats" used by the city of Detroit. Attendees will hear from special guest Ish Monroe, a Bassmaster Elite Professional Angler.

The SURGE Events Committee is seeking partners to help facilitate boating experiences for students on the Detroit River. Each group may contain up to 50 students, requiring multiple boats for this portion of the event. The Coast Guard will be giving a safety presentation to students, who will then load onto boats and enjoy a 25-minute boat ride on the river.

If you are interested in helping provide boat rides or registering for the event, please contact Gina at [email protected]or contact Great Lakes Boat Building School at 906-484-1081.
