Now Accepting City Boards and Commissions Applications

Volunteer as a Board or Commission Member

Are you looking for ways to give back to the community? If so, we have a spot for you! We're looking for committed residents willing to volunteer a few hours of their time each month to serve on a board or commission.

Rowlett citizens are encouraged to participate in their municipal government through service on various City boards and commissions. These volunteer boards are composed of citizens who are appointed by the City Council. Most positions are appointed for terms ranging from one to two years. Other appointments are made as necessary to fill vacancies or when new boards are created. Refer to the Boards and Commissions Handbook for more information.

Application Process

City Council has changed the timeframe for their annual appointments with the update of the Handbook. Council will now make their annual appointments during December for terms beginning January 1. Applications open and will be accepted on September 1 with a deadline of November 14 each year.

For currently seated Board or Commission members the process has also changed. Please fill out the regular applicationand submit it during the September 1 through November 14 timeframe, no special application is needed now. You may submit your application for the current seat held or may be considered for a different Board or Commission. (handbook (PDF), Section 2.5)

PLEASE NOTE: Applications received AFTER the deadline will be kept on file through August 31 in case there are mid-year vacancies. Applicants will be notified by staff for specific times.

An Online application is available or you may obtain a paper form via email or in the City Secretary's Office in the City Hall Municipal Center at 4000 Main Street. Youth members who wish to apply for advisory Boards and/or Commissions will be appointed as Junior Alternate Members and may participate as non-voting members. Youth applicants must be Rowlett citizens in the ninth, tenth, eleventh or twelfth grade. Junior Alternate Member applications (PDF) must be completed, printed and notarized. Completed applications can be dropped off at the City Secretary's Office, faxed to 972-412-6118or emailed to the City Secretary's Office.

The Boards and Commissions attendance policy is clearly stated in the handbook (PDF) under Section 3.1.

Mandatory Open Meetings Act Training

All appointed and reappointed members of a board or commission shall complete mandatory Open Meetings Act training within 45 days of their appointment or reappointment to comply with the Open Meetings Act. Online training may be completed by watching the Texas Attorney General's Open Meetings Act Video, or a DVD may be checked out from the City Secretary's Office.

Agendas, minutes, resolutions, ordinances, packets and election results dating from 1952 to the present (following City Council approval) are located in Laserfiche, a document imaging program used by the City for archived records.
