Sen. Ossoff, Bipartisan Colleagues Urge Quick Passage of Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief Package

Atlanta, Ga. - U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff and a bipartisan group of Senators are urging quick passage of a disaster relief package to help Georgia families affected by Hurricane Helene.

This week, Sen. Ossoff joined Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Senators from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia urgingSenate leadership to pass an appropriations package to support the millions impacted by Hurricane Helene as damage assessments continue.

"The devastation from Hurricane Helene across the southeastern United States is simply inconceivable," Sens. Ossoff, Tillis, and colleagues wrote. "Even preliminary damage assessments indicate that, at a minimum, the total damage and economic loss will be in the tens of billions of dollars. This amount will likely soar as recovery efforts continue and the full picture of this ruinous disaster becomes clear."

"Although the true level of devastation is still unfolding, it is clear that Congress must act to meet the unmet needs in our states and address the scope and scale of destruction experienced by our constituents. This may even require Congress to come back in October to ensure we have enough time to enact legislation before the end of this calendar year," the Senators continued. "Tens of millions of Americans were impacted by Hurricane Helene, and we look forward to working with you to provide relief to those impacted by this horrific storm."

Sens. Ossoff and Tillis were joined by Senators Ted Budd (R-NC), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Tim Scott (R-SC), Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rick Scott (R-FL), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Mark Warner (D-VA), and Tim Kaine (D-VA).

This week, Sen. Ossoff and Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08), alongside Georgia's entire Congressional Delegation, led a bipartisan, bicameral group of 34 lawmakers from Southeastern states urging Congressional Leadership to work with them and the Biden Administration to ensure disaster relief resources are made available to agricultural producers following the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene for agriculture.

On Tuesday, Sen. Ossoff spoke with AgNet Radio to discuss the dire need for economic relief for Georgia farmers and growers after the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene and his push to pass relief.

On Monday, Sen. Ossoff and Georgia's entire Congressional Delegation urged swift approval of Georgia's request for a Major Federal Disaster Declaration to unlock key Federal disaster funding for impacted families, businesses, and local governments.
