Severe Storm Brings Damaging Winds; Curbside Collection Begins Monday, August 5

Press Release

Des Moines, Iowa- Thursday, August 1, 2024 - Just weeks after a round of storms - including an EF1 tornado - created over 900 truckloads of debris, Des Moines Public Works is preparing for another round of cleanup operations following Wednesday night's severe weather.

Curbside collection of storm debris will begin Monday, August 5, for all Des Moines residents. There will only be one pass city wide, and residents must have all tree or yard debris from the storm at the curb by Monday morning if they require curbside collection.

"While it'd have been nice to get through July without another heavy storm, Mother Nature clearly had other plans," said Public Works Director Jonathan Gano. "Fortunately, our dedicated staff is ready to help clean up Des Moines once again."

To be collected, debris must less than 18" in diameter, and cut down to less than 10' in length. Please be sure to place items away from utilities and in a manner that does not block sidewalks or roadways.

Public Works will also open its Compost Center at 1601 Harriet Street for those interested in dropping off their excess yard waste or tree debris. The event will be free with proof of Des Moines residence, and normal SCRUB guidelines apply.

Solid waste collection services for trash, recycling and yard waste will not be impacted and will operate on their usual schedule.

No major closures have been reported due to the storm, but residents can always view the latest changes to roads and trail access at DSM.city/Closures. You can report downed trees blocking the road at DSM.city/Report, with the myDSMmobile app, or by phone 24/7 at (515) 283-4950.
