Upcoming Programs at Camp Hancock State Historic Site

BISMARCK, N.D. - Enjoy free interactive learning programs at Camp Hancock State Historic Site in Bismarck. All ages are welcome. Day cares and summer camps are encouraged to attend. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cookies and lemonade will be served.
Aug. 2 Paddleboats, 1-3 p.m. Paddleboats were used to go up and down the Missouri River. It's all-hands-on-deck as you build your own paddleboat.
Aug. 3 Zine Creations, 2-4 p.m. Bismarck pioneer Linda Slaughter came to live at Camp Hancock in 1872. She was a well-known writer and educator who regularly wrote for the "Bismarck Tribune" and other papers. Learn more about her work, then tell your story by making a homemade publication called a zine.
Aug. 9 Morse Code, 1-3 p.m. Morse code was used by the U.S. Weather Bureau to share weather information. Decode this long-distance communication tool, then craft Morse code bracelets.

Aug. 10 Watercolor Skies, 2-4 p.m. North Dakota is known for beautiful skies. Put brush to paper to bring alive your own watercolor sky.

Aug. 16 Airplanes, 1-3 p.m. The U.S. Weather Bureau reported the weather for every mode of transportation. Camp Hancock is in the flight path of the Bismarck Municipal Airport, and you can regularly see planes fly overhead. View the different instruments used to forecast the weather, and make your own airplane.

Aug. 17 Coffee Painting, 2-4 p.m. Painting with coffee is an artistic way to use a common household staple as a medium. Experiment with techniques to your brew up your own caffeinated creation.

Camp Hancock State Historic Site, 101 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck, is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
