Route 40 Chestnut Street/National Pike Bridge Preservation to Begin in Washington County

07/25/2024

Uniontown, PA - Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 12 is announcing that Route 40 (Chestnut Street/National Pike) is scheduled to close Monday, August 5, between Antion Lane and Route 3009 (Sunset Beach Road) in Buffalo Township, Washington County.

Crews from F. Gavlik & Sons will be rehabilitating the bridge that carries Route 40 over Buffalo Creek - an infrastructure investment of $338K. Work includes excavating, replacing the existing pavement and fill on an adjacent box beam bridge, waterproofing existing beams, and structure foundation drainage. These preservations will raise the load capacity of the existing structure, should Route 40 need to be used as an emergency detour during the underground longwall mining operation on Interstate 70.

The closure is anticipated through late August. All work depends on weather and operations.

Traffic will be detoured using:

  • Route 40 (Chestnut Street Ext., Main Street, National Pike).
  • Route 3024 (Old National Pike).
  • I-70.
    • From I-70 East to Route 221 North - use Route 3030 (Buffalo Church Road).
    • From Route 221 South to I-70 West - use Route 3008 (Jolly School Road).
  • Route 221 (South Bridge Road).
  • Route 40 (Chestnut Street Ext.).

Remain alert and follow the posted signs and speed limits. Safety is everyone's responsibility.
