Rep. Cuellar Announces Over $28.5 Million from Shelter and Services Program to Support San Antonio Community Amid Migrant Arrivals

Today, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced over $28.5 million in federal funding to support Bexar County in regards to irregular migration. These funds were provided from the Fiscal Year 2024 Shelter and Services (SSP) Program, a program Congressman Cuellar started in 2014. The City of San Antonio will receive $8,585,818, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. will receive $16,926,129, and the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas will receive $3,006,434 in reimbursements for costs incurred for services associated with noncitizen migrant arrivals in the community.

"It is critical that we bring law and order to our southern border. I have been working in constant coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and our local entities here in San Antonio to tackle the challenges that continue to arise in our border communities. The funds announced today will reimburse the City of San Antonio, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of San Antonio, and the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas for their important work in alleviating pressure in our local communities," said Congressman Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security.

Congressman Cuellar continued, "I started this important program in 2014 to reimburse local governments and organizations who support our men and women on the ground. We're seeing the results of that today. I will continue working at all levels of government to ensure that our communities are equipped to handle influxes of irregular migration. Thank you to the City of San Antonio, Mayor Nirenberg, and my colleagues in the San Antonio Congressional Delegation for working with me to provide relief for our border communities."

The FY24 Shelter and Services Program (SSP) provides federal funding for non-federal entities to reimburse costs incurred for services associated with noncitizen migrant arrivals in their communities.
