FEMA Accommodates People with Disabilities at Disaster Recovery Centers

  • FEMA offers a variety of alternative communication methods, including assistive Video Remote Interpretation Services in the following electronic formats:
    • Large print materials;
    • Assistive listening programs that allow the survivor to hear the material read aloud;
    • Real time interactive interpretive services via tablet or phone;
    • Closed captioning of material or information via tablet or phone; and
    • Translation apps via tablet or phone.

Resources and Services Available at DRCs:

  • iPads that provide video remote sign language available upon request.
  • Accessible parking, ramps, entrances and restrooms available to survivors.
  • An "I Speak" sign that lists various languages, as well as a contact number survivors can be used to call a translator for a preferred language.
  • Pocket Talkers (adjustable headphones for survivors with hearing disabilities).

Sign-Language Interpreters are Available:

  • If you need an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, one may be at DRCs as well as any public meetings associated with the disaster. If you want to make sure an interpreter will be available, call the HelpLine at 800-621-3362 to schedule assistance are available.

Registering with FEMA is the First Step for any Survivor:

  • Many of the services available at Disaster Recovery Centers also are available by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362, voice/VP/711/video relay service. Multilingual operators are on duty. TTY users may call 800-462-7585. Lines are open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time.
  • Register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
