Rep. Scott Hilton Receives 2024 Humane Legislator Award from the Humane Society of the United States

ATLANTA - State Representative Scott Hilton (R-Peachtree Corners) was recently honored by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) with the 2024 Humane Legislator Award. This award recognizes legislators for their leadership and commitment to animal protection issues.

"I'm proud of the progress we've made in advancing animal protection in Georgia," said Rep. Hilton. "During the 2023 legislative session, I worked to strengthen our state's animal cruelty laws by adding cockfighting to the existing dogfighting statute and advocating for tougher penalties for exposing minors to these inhumane activities. Cracking down on animal cruelty is not only essential for protecting our pets, but it also reflects our values as a compassionate society. I'm grateful to the Humane Society for honoring me with the 2024 Humane Legislator Award, and I look forward to continuing our work to improve the welfare of companion animals and promote a more humane approach across the state."

During the 2023 legislative session, Rep. Hilton introduced House Bill 217, which would incorporate cockfighting into Georgia's existing dogfighting statute and would establish stricter penalties for those who bring minors to dogfights or cockfights. In addition, Rep. Hilton co-sponsored House Bill 573, which would prohibit the marketing and transfer of certain domestic animals in inappropriate locations. He also introduced legislation focused on enhancing the humane treatment of animals during natural disasters. Known as the "Pets in Emergencies Act," this measure would ensure that pets are safely evacuated and sheltered during emergencies.

The HSUS addresses issues related to puppy mills, factory farms, the fur trade, trophy hunting, animal testing for cosmetics and other industries associated with animal cruelty. Through rescue, response and sanctuary efforts, the organization assists thousands of animals annually. Their mission is to combat all forms of animal cruelty and work toward realizing the vision of a humane society.

Representative Scott Hilton represents the citizens of District 48, which includes portions of Fulton and Gwinnett counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2016 and re-elected in 2022 and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Creative Arts & Entertainment and Education committees. He also serves on the Public Health and Urban Affairs committees.
