New pump station, tank will improve service to Avon customers

AVON, Conn., Oct. 8, 2024- Contractors hoisted a prefabricated pump station building into place using a crane in Avon Friday morning, the next step in a $4 million infrastructure project to improve water service for customers in the area for decades to come.

The pump station sits in front of a recently constructed 1.3-million-gallon water tank. The original tank exceeded life expectancy after more than 60 years of operation. The new tank will go into service in the coming weeks.

The pump station and water tank are part of a larger project to increase service reliability by updating aging infrastructure. Next year, water mains in the area will get replaced, with the pump station going into service shortly afterwards.

Pump stations increase pressure in water mains. This pump station contains two pumps for domestic needs capable of delivering 50 gallons per minute and a pump for fire protection capable of delivering 1,000 gallons per minute.

Once complete, the project will provide customers in the area with improved water pressure, water quality and reliability.

The water main replacement portion of the project is funded through the Water Infrastructure and Conservation Adjustment (WICA) on customer bills. Connecticut Water's goal is to replace about one percent of its more than 1,850 miles of water main every year through the WICA program.
