Painted Bride Presents Communal Archive & Arts Workshop Series Celebrating Disabled Philadelphians

Artist collective Hook&Loop in residence at the Bride's West Philadelphia location from Oct. 19 - Nov. 23, 2024

Philadelphia, PA (October 4, 2024) - Painted Bride presents "Undue Burden" (Oct. 19 - Nov. 23, 2024), a residency by Hook&Loop, an artist collective led by Disabled, Sick, neurodivergent and MAD people in Philadelphia. "Undue Burden" includes both a digital and printed community archive celebrating and documenting the experiences of Disabled people; histories often pathologized or ignored. Disabled Philadelphians are invited to contribute to the growing, living archive installation through 5 accessible, multi-sensory workshops. The installation and all workshops will take place at the Painted Bride in West Philadelphia (5212 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19139).

Events include an accessible dance aerobics class with QUEEROBICS, a touch-able art gallery by Sick and Disabled artists, and an "ILL-egal" wedding party, in reference to the major, penalizing impact marriage can have on SSI payments for Disabled folks. In their "Access Manifesto," written collectively by Hook&Loop artists, they affirm that "The stories in our archive are by us and about us. We document Disabled art. We document Disabled love, rage, exclusion, and belonging. We document stories that have been ignored and silenced. We are here. Access artistry will not be gatekept."

The event is co-presented by Painted Bride and Hook&Loop, and made possible by the support of the Bartol Foundation and Cedar Crest College.
