Maryland Energy Administration Announces Funding to Accelerate Commercial Solar Installations and Streamline Solar Permitting

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) launched two grant programs that will expand solar adoption across the state and accelerate local permitting processes. Through the Commercial Solar Grant Program, MEA will provide $5 million in new funding to help businesses and nonprofit organizations invest in solar systems that benefit low-and-moderate income and underserved communities. The program offers funding on a first-come, first-served basis, with initial funding allocations for certain applicant types, including nonprofit organizations, small businesses, minority- and veteran-owned businesses, and businesses with significant energy needs.

MEA also launched the Maryland SolarAPP+ Implementation Grant Program to assist counties and municipalities with the implementation of SolarAPP+, a free solar permitting software designed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to help automate permitting processes and reduce installation timelines. Leveraging nearly $4 million in State Energy Program funding available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, MEA's program will help cover implementation costs such as staff training, software integration, and contractual support.
