Stony Brook Represents at Press Club of Long Island Media Awards

Stony Brook University students and staff were well-represented at the Press Club of Long Island's 2024 Media Awards, taking home 17 awards, including seven first-place honors.

The Press Club of Long Island is one of the largest chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, and is devoted to protecting and advocating for First Amendment rights, furthering ethical standards and providing ongoing training for its members. The Media Awards honor the best in local journalism and includes inductions of the newest members of the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame.

The Statesman won first place for Best College News Website, Investigative Student Journalism (Viola Flowers) and Best College Newspaper Reporter (Mariam Guirgis). The Stony Brook Press won first place for Best Magazine and Student Journalism Narrative News Story (Kaitlyn Schwanemann), and also second place for Best College News Website. The Press also swept the Illustration category.

Stony Brook University Magazine took home two awards, including first place for the feature story "Her Heart of Rock and Roll," and third place for the feature, "A Living Tradition: Two graduate students adapt a collective approach to preserving endangered languages."
