EPSRC Strategic Partnership reaps rewards for University of Huddersfield

The Engineering and Physical Research Council (EPSRC) has been working with universities for over two decades. Its role is to create knowledge in engineering and physical sciences in the UK to benefit society and the economy, a vision which is shared by the University of Huddersfield.

As one of 36 university strategic partners the University of Huddersfield benefits from this partnership by attracting further funding and knowledge exchange to support its groundbreaking research in engineering and physical sciences.

"Working so closely with the EPSRC is tremendously beneficial for the University of Huddersfield. We celebrated a successful Research Excellence Framework result in 2021 and are now placed in the top third of institutions in terms of research power. Added to this we have world-leading applied research groups, including in engineering and physical sciences. This partnership will enhance our research activity which will bring real benefits to wider society in the UK and globally," commented Professor Andrew Ball, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research Innovation and Knowledge Exchange.

Each strategic partner university adopts its own tailored approach with the EPSRC to maximise its research potential. The EPSRC invests the majority of its funding in UK universities and given the long-term nature of these partnerships which cover a three-year cycle, the research opportunities for Huddersfield are significant.

A collaborative approach

By taking a collaborate approach the two parties are able to work together to achieve strategy and policy goals, which play a vital role in engineering and the physical sciences. This partnership brings with it mutual benefits including sharing knowledge and expertise.

The University of Huddersfield will benefit from this partnership by having regular contact with the senior leadership within the EPSRC, including attending flagship key partner events and having input into high level advocacy for engineering and physical sciences to help inform government and other stakeholders.
