August 28, 2024

The new Permanent Observer of Italy to the Organization of American States (OAS), Roberto Nocella, presented his credentials today to OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro during a ceremony held at the Organization's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Ambassador Nocella acknowledged the importance Italy attaches to its Mission as a permanent observer "to an Organization whose founding Charter contains concepts such as integral development, the fight against extreme poverty and the promotion of a space for freedom and development." "We are involved in many OAS programs in support of peace and security, the development of electoral missions, in legal diplomacy and attentive to police cooperation."

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro said the Organization he leads and the European country "work together for fundamental principles that are common to us: the promotion and strengthening of democracy, human rights, multidimensional security and integral development." "Italy's presence and accompaniment dates back to 1972 and is further proof of the deep commitment and closeness between Italy and the Americas," he concluded.

Ambassador Nocella is a career diplomat with a background in political science, history and international politics and holds a PhD in International Studies.
