Aquatics Master Plan

DENTON, TX, Sept. 5, 2024 - Earlier this year, the City Council approved the Parks and Recreation Aquatics Master Plan. The City of Denton manages three outdoor aquatics facilities - Water Works Park (WWP), Civic Center Pool (CCP), Natatorium (NAT), and Carl Young, Sr. Sprayground. The Aquatics Center comprises Water Works Park and the Natatorium, which share a joint use agreement with Denton ISD.

Needed updates to the City's aquatics system were first discussed in the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan (PRTSMP, adopted Spring 2022). The Aquatics Master Plan approved by the City Council in February 2024 conducts a deeper dive into the current state of aquatic offerings in Denton, compares Denton's aquatics system with other regional cities, and provides clear guidance for future aquatics developments to ensure that Denton's aquatics infrastructure meets the needs and expectations of Denton residents over the course of the next 15 years and beyond.

The Aquatics Master Plan was developed by a team of consultants in close consultation with Parks and Recreation staff and with input from Denton residents and stakeholders. Public input received from a series of public meetings held in both 2022 and 2023 informed consultants' conceptual plans and future design and construction recommendations. The final document also includes cost estimates and implementation scenarios.

The first phase of improvements recommended by the aquatics master plan - a broad array of upgrades to Water Works Park - are currently in the planning and design phase. This phase will include installation of a new flat-water leisure and programming pool, installation of new and larger children's play structures, construction of indoor/outdoor multipurpose rooms, installation of new shade structures throughout the park, improvements to security systems, and various other changes.
