August 28, 2024 Heart failure cardiologist Lawrence Justin Charles, MD, joins Georgia Heart Institute View »

When Lawrence Justin Charles, MD, was just a kid growing up in Ohio, he learned that his mother needed a stent to treat her coronary artery disease. This experience inspired him to pursue a career in medicine so he could help other mothers, fathers and loved ones with heart problems. Now he's a board-certified cardiologist specializing in advanced heart failure, and he recently joined Georgia Heart Institute to see patients in Gainesville and Dawsonville.

"Thinking back on my mom's care reminds me to treat patients the way you would want any relative to be treated," said Dr. Charles. "When I go to the doctor, I want to them to be direct, thorough with their explanations, knowledgeable and kind."

Dr. Charles trained in Nashville, Tennessee, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he completed an Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Fellowship and a General Cardiology Fellowship with Distinction in Cardio-Oncology. He also completed an Internal Medicine residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and he earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati.

"My clinical interests allow me to help people who often have very different needs, since I'm usually helping advanced heart failure patients manage a chronic illness to stay out of the hospital or helping cardio-oncology during intense medical treatment cycles," said Dr. Charles. "My research interests mirror my clinical interests. I specifically enjoy the research that goes into preventing heart failure in patients who are undergoing cancer treatment."
