The television studio in Foy Hall benefited from a complete makeover this summer. Now more than ever, it's ready for those bright studio lights.

The College's TV studio equipment is all less than ten years old, and in some cases, it's higher grade than what you'll find at professional stations. But, Siena's studio - which is a massively important resource for many journalism and sports communications classes - lacked a certain panache. Now it's oozing with style.

Mitch Young, Siena's television studio manager, led a summer project to punch up the studio and its sets. In fact, he added a second, more conversational set to augment the news desk. The upgrades also include:

  • monitors in the news desk so students can see the program feed
  • a vertical wall monitor for in-studio reporting
  • wall cladding and paneling for the aesthetics
  • a green screen curtain (which replaces the green wall that was displaced for the new set)
  • monitor near the green curtain so students can see themselves while reporting "on location"

"When the students walk into the studio, I want them to get the feels of a professional station. This update and remodel is all designed for students to get real-life experience as news and sports journalists. We want the studio to be as welcoming as possible for new and prospective students, and we want to make sure they have all the tools necessary to succeed. The TV Studio is a tremendous asset for our program. It will allow us to produce a product that students can show employers once they start their job search."

Mitch Young, TV studio manager

"The studio update provides more exciting and dynamic opportunities for student production work, including multiple sets. The variation in sets gives more potential for collaboration across various communications courses. The studio is a vibrant space for students and faculty working in courses, internships, and in our student-led television studio club."

Josh Iddings, Ph.D., coordinator for the communications program, associate professor of writing and communication

Young spearheaded the makeover, but it took a cross-campus team to complete the space. From ITS to facilities, carpenters and designers, thanks to everyone who lent their talents to the project!
